Frontline gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro on Tuesday formally declared his aspiration to run for the office of Lagos State governor in the 2015 election, promising to create a Greater Lagos where most citizens will have access to basic infrastructural amenities
In a carnival-like event which held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Obanikoro who was until recently, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, climbed the podium at exactly 12:05 noon with his wife, Alhaja Morufat Obanikoro to greet the teeming crowd of supporters waiting to receive him. He declared that he has decided to run for the Lagos State Governorship position to restructure the current one-sidedness in the distribution of infrastructural development in State for the benefit of the masses.
Obanikoro’s declaration had an array of Nigerian musicians including popular Fuji crooner, Osupa Saheed and the rave-making hip-hop artiste Oritse Femi, amongst others. It also recorded presence of many political and interest groups adorning different branded uniform attires otherwise call Aso-Ebi, T-Shirts, wristbands and banner posters with inscriptions suggesting Senator Obanikoro as the best politician for the Lagos top job
In his opening speech, Senator Obanikoro said, “I have come to bring governance closer to the masses of our great State. I have come to offer the much needed selfless leadership to the people of Lagos State wherever they lived in Lagos. I have come to run an inclusive government where the rich or some few elite are not positioned above the ordinary man in our State. I have come to recreate a Greater Lagos that is befitting of everybody who lived in Lagos”.
He noted further, that a Lagos State government under his leadership would not tolerate impartiality in the distribution of development across the State. “We will correct a situation where cases like Ikoyi and Lekki would receive huge deployment of infrastructural up-lift at the expense of areas like Alimosho, Ajeromi Ifelodun and other less developed parts of the State. Today, I have come to give you the news of a greater Lagos.
My definition of a Greater Lagos is a a new Lagos where the masses will not be neglected at expense of the rich. My Greater Lagos is that Lagos where Students from poor home will enjoy benefits of receiving the same education that will make them stand shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues in other parts of the world”, he noted.
He promised to improve on the current state of the health sector in Lagos, with particular attention to controlling malaria disease. While expressing dismay at the rate which Malaria is threatening lives of the masses, Senator Obanikoro said, “I will establish Malaria Control Centre in the 20 local government areas of the State to tackle the disease.”
He promised Lagosians of a people-oriented government where no god-father is the one controlling the affairs of the State.
Speaking earlier, Mr. Makanjuola Ogundipe, South-West PDP Chairman admonished the teeming crowd at the event not to vote in favour of the current government in Lagos State. He said a vote for PDP is a vote for more federal government presence in the State

The group was led by a former Lagos State University (LASU) Student Union Leader, Mr. Ademola Olanrewaju. He noted that the current government in Lagos does not have human face and does not deserve the vote of the millions of Youths and masses in the State. “Senator Musiliu Obanikoro had seen it all, he has a good heart for the masses, he has been there at the grassroots, State level and the National politics, and he will be able to bring the goodies of good governance to our people”.
